About Us
Sea Goat Farmstand & Makers’ Space is a vibrant, community-driven hub in the heart of McKinleyville, CA, dedicated to connecting people through local food, traditional crafts, and hands-on education. Rooted in sustainability and community resilience, we cultivate meaningful connections, preserve traditional knowledge, and empower individuals through shared experiences in food, craft, and culture.
At the core of our work is Sea Goat Farmstand's Micro-Farm, a small urban regenerative micro-farm and market garden committed to sustainable, chemical-free farming. We use low-till methods, composting, vermiculture, and crop rotation to grow fresh, nutrient-dense produce while nurturing the land. Our farmstand and online store offer a curated selection of locally grown produce, seafood, bread, eggs, and artisan goods, making high-quality, local food more accessible to our community while supporting small farmers and producers.
Through our Makers’ Space and Folk School programs, we provide accessible retail opportunities, skill-sharing workshops, and creative spaces for learning and collaboration. Whether through farming, crafting, or food education, we are committed to fostering a thriving local economy and empowering people with practical skills for a more sustainable future.
Honoring Our Roots
The History of Sea Goat Farm
Sea Goat Farmstand & Makers’ Space is deeply grateful for the support of Grace Good Shepherd Church & Abbey of the Redwoods, whose generosity helped lay the foundation for our farm and mission. Though Sea Goat Farmstand is in its 5th season, this land has been cultivated for 38 years.
The garden began in 1986 as a ministry of Grace Good Shepherd Church, when Verne Thornton transformed a section of cow pasture into a garden that supplied fresh produce to the McKinleyville Food Bank and church pantry. After 15 years, stewardship passed to Stan Schmidt, a retired police officer, who lovingly tended the land for 18 years, after which he entrusted it to Megan Blumenstein who was his volunteer in the garden.
With the relocation of the McKinleyville Community Resource Center, the garden’s role evolved, leading to the launch of Sea Goat Farmstand in 2021. This transition was supported by The Abbey of the Redwoods, a community outreach initiative of Grace Good Shepherd Church, blending spirituality, environmental stewardship, and community connection.
Today, Sea Goat Farmstand & Makers’ Space continues this legacy—growing food, fostering education, and strengthening community ties—while honoring its deep-rooted history of service.
